Just how did the town of Dillsboro come into being, and where did the name “Dillsboro" come from? STRAWGEL07E" Cne Show Sunday at 9:00 Monday Shows at 7:30 & 9:25 Feature Approx, 20 min. after show starts Tue-Hed June 16-17 Richard Burton-Jean SinMons "THE ROBE" in Color & CineoooaScope Shows at 7:00 & 9:30 Feature Approx. 7:10 & 9:40 in S94,800 RESEARCH GRANT HADE TO HIGHLANDS BIOLOGICAL STATION A grant of $9^f800 has been made by the NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION to the Highlands Biological Station, The funds are for a continuation of the study of the ecology of the gorges of the south eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, The program covered by the grant is for a three year period. The research in the escarpment gorges has been in progress for three years, supported by funds from the Na tional Science Foundation, To facili tate the research, the Highlands Biolo gical Station maintains a base camp in the gorge under investigation. Currently the base camp is in the Thompson River Gorge where it will be in operation for about two years. Research has been con ducted previously in the Toxaway River, Horsepasture River, Bearwallow Creek and Bearcamp Creek gorges. In commenting on the new grant-in- aid, Dr. Thelma Howell, executive direct or of the biological station, said that the research program in the'gorges had attracted national attention and had been received most favorably by biologists. Reports of the research are regularly appearing in leading scientific journals. The research is coordinated by Dr, H. J. Costing, department of botany, Duke University, Dr. Howell is assis tant coordinator. HARBISON, NcCALL HEAD STAFF The staff of the GALAX NEWS this year includes Miss Jessie Lynn Harbison and Miss Frieda McCall, Mr. Michael McCall will be working on a part-time basis. Miss Harbison is a rising junior at Western Carolina College where she is majoring in Elementary Education, She will be working as Editor this summer and has served as Assistant Editor for the past two summers. Miss McCall is a senior at Highlands High School this coming year and this is her first summer with the GALAX NEWS, Frieda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V* W, McCall, Mr. McCall is cashier of the First Union National Bank in Highlands and is a former mayor of Highlands, Mike will enter his freshman year at Highlands High School this fall.
